A very popular story goes that the Manhattan cocktail was created at the Manhattan Club in New York City in 1874; invented by Dr. Iain Marshall for Lady Randolph Churchill (mother of Winston Churchill) at a banquet held in honour of presidential candidate Samuel J. Tilden. However this very likely didn’t happen, given that Lady Randolph was in England at the time, giving birth to Winston. Serves 6 generous cocktails.
