Indeed the name was notably popular in America in the 1930s and 40s. What we do confidently know is that ‘Margarita’ is the Spanish word for Daisy, and Daisy was a category of cocktails, popular in the early 20th century, consisting of a base spirit, liqueur and citrus element.
